Paint Contractor: How to correctly use the paint roller

In all of our years as paint contractor we are constantly asked how to paint in different ways and manners, and none more so than using a paint roller, a tool that even though seems easy to use, it actually requires technique so you can cover the most surface in less time and also avoid spilling paint all over the place.

Let’s start by where will you have the paint while you do the work, for a start let us tell you that the best is to use a bucket, why? Because you can move around easily and without spilling the paint. Now, before you begin you need to have your paint already thinned (we already covered that on a previous article) and ready for use.

Now, you have to dip the roller no more than half an inch to get it soaked in paint, then slowly rolled back out against the side of the bucket, this will make the excess paint to drop back into the bucket and not end on the floor near your painting area.

To apply the paint go from bottom to top, floor to ceiling with slow but firm movements, making sure the area is well covered do so until you cover the wall completely, for the corners get the roller as close to the other wall as possible but avoid touching it.

One of the important parts of the process is to choose a high quality roller, you may be asking at this point, why? Why not a cheaper one? Well, there are powerful reasons. A good quality roller will keep more paint and will be more durable, this means you won’t need to be buying roller after roller before you finish the job.

Finally make sure there are no lumps and if there are clean them up before they dry. And once you are ready to clean the roller take the excess paint so you don’t have trouble.

And remember to keep coming for more paint contractor tips.
