When cutting wood we recommend going with a rift or quarter grain cut, this will guarantee you stability as flat cuts will tend to expand and contract seasonally and this could put in risk the structure where you are applying it to.
One of the most important things to know is to set up the lumber with the heart facing up, this will make it more resistant and far more reliable that if you set it the other way around.
Also, become acquainted with the use of hand tools, this is going to be really necessary as working with wood means, and has been like this since the early times, being able to work with it using your hands and of course, tools, like saws, glue, hammer, and so on. The most reliable structures are those in which the hand work is present.
Finally when working joints, use traditional methods like nails, glue, and joint techniques, it is not recommended that you use solely epoxy solutions or similar as they might be good adhesives but might not respond well to the changing temperatures to which wood installed for construction or restoration is subjected to.
