Paint Contractor: What’s a “sealant”
There is no doubt that any paint contractor has heard this question one time or another, well today we are going to answer it so you can get a better idea of it.
This applies mostly to paint jobs that will be subject to elements suchs water, dust and anything that could get the paint off. And most of all, to cars. You see, a car gets wet everytime you wash it, it gets dirty day in and day out, and the last thing you need is for it to have the paint run off a-la-three-stooges when a liquid fells or is deliberately applied to it.
So, here is the thing, the paint applied to car is not just designed for that specific purpose it is also a paint that is not water but oil based making it de facto impervious to water, yet this is not enough to protect it as, with time, it can and will start to lose its pigment if not cared for. And care for it means answering our question, that is applying a sealant.
A sealant is a substance that forms some sort of a protective film on top of the paint in order to protect it and make it impervious to common elements like water, dust and others, allowing for them to not adhere to the surface which results in them fall off either on impact or when water is applied.
For example, when you get your car all muddy after a drive, you need to wash it, so you go to a car-wash, there when soap and water are applied, all the mud will fall off, yet not the paint, it will not because of the sealant, that will be a protective layer between mud and the car paint.
In some instances the paint itself contains a sealant of its own, alas, professional painters and in the factories too, prefer to add their own sealant when to make sure that the product they deliver is above the expectations and the colors durable as possible.
So, we hope you know understand the purpose of paint sealants and why paint contractors, especially those who work with cars, do this when they apply a new layer of paint to your car or any other surface like it.
