Home Restoration: The importance of treating wood

When you do home restoration you will come across cases where you will need to work in areas where wood is present and you need to know how to work it because it is a very very delicate material.

When you work with wood there are two instances of this matter, treated and untreated wood. The untreated kind is literally wood off the three, that has received nothing to it and it is the most delicate because it is prone to be damaged by water, insects, mold and many other risks inherent to this material.

Treated wood on the other hand is the type of wood that has received a layer of sealant that protects it and makes it waterproof and insect proof.

Therefore when you get to work with wood, you need to first asses to whether or not it is treated, if the answer is no, then the recommended way to go is remove and rebuild, not knowing if a wood column is damaged by mold or termites for example may pose a dangerous structural risk to the whole construction no matter how small it might be.

Also, never assume that the wood you are working with is well treated, we recommend that you treat it with sealant and make sure it is also mold and termite proof, as these are the most common enemies of any wood construction.

But never forget to also consult the professionals in order to guarantee success in all and any home restoration project you work on.
