Home Restoration: Glue or nalis when working with wood structures

When you do home restoration you will definitely find yourself in the scenario where you will need to setup a wood structure, either because it is an add-on to an existing one or because you are rebuilding one. Either way, when the time arrives to work with joints you will ask yourself this question for sure: nails or glue?

Well the answer might shock you: Both. Yes, when you work with wood joints you need to use both glue and nails because you need to reinforce those joints specially if they are supporting weight or any kind of structure on them.

Glue will do the adhesion part keeping both pieces together, of course we are not talking about the kind of glue kids use at school, we talk about professional wood specific kind of glue. This is very important as this kind of adhesive is designed to make best of the porosity of the wood to ensure a good, strong and durable bond.

On the other hand nails will reinforce the joint and will secure it, giving it the necessary resistance especially if said structure will have to support weight of any kind in it. You also need to be sure that the nails you use are wood specific nails (there are nails for all kinds of jobs so using the right ones is a must as using the wrong kind of nails might damage the wood and ruin the whole project).

So, next time you do home restoration on a wood structure remember, it is not whether you choose nails or glue, you need both to ensure a good job and a great finish.
